Gold: the Most Precious of Metals

Gold is a precious metal that is highly sought after. It is used for dentistry purposes, as well as for electronics. Gold is probably best known to most because of jewelry. Gold jewelry is worth a great deal of money, depending on the price of gold when the jewelry is sold. Some people say that gold has an intrinsic value, though others disagree. Depending on the type of gold such as 24-karat, 14-karat, or 10-karat, gold can be worth a great deal of money.

Some gold pieces are worth so much because they are considered very rare, due to being found in Egypt and the Middle East or having historical value. The Persian Empire used gold for most of its famous art work. There have been numerous gold rushes that have occurred throughout history. In 1848, Sutter's Mill in California sparked the most famous gold rush ever recorded in history. Soon after, the gold rush in Australia began in 1851, followed by one in South Africa in 1884, and then finally in Canada in 1897.

Gold has a pure metallic yellow color. Because of the softness of 24-karat gold, it usually contains other alloys to make it hard enough for use in jewelry. Gold can be used as a decoration or component in food and drink, due to the fact that pure gold is non-toxic. Gold leaf, in the form of a flake or dust, has been used in many foods. And as we all well know, gold is the highest medal awarded to winners in the Olympics, as well as the Nobel Prize winners. It is used as a symbol of rarity, achievement, and victory.
